The road upgrade described in my devotion is now complete. The arrangement is very different, but I have come to appreciate that it is better. This prompted me to think about change. At times, it seems like change is the only constant in our lives. Several years ago, I discussed career progression with a younger engineer who reported to me. I used the analogy of a series of rooms, with each new room being a new phase in his career. My advice was as follows:
“As you move from one room to another, you will have to put down some familiar things and pick up new things. It is no good pining for what was; you must embrace what now is.”
Recently I had to apply that advice to myself, as I walked through the final door of my career and into retirement. It is different, but in the various seasons of life there is always something we can appreciate.
Malachi 3:6 proclaims the Lord does not change. God is good and will always act in our best interests.
God is truly the only constant in our ever-changing lives, and because of that we need never fear change—regardless of how unsettling it may appear.
